What should you check first when loading docking stations are used after a summer downpour in New York?
In the New York metropolitan area, the impact of short, heavy summer downpours often only becomes apparent after the peak delivery season: flooding at doorways, water-soaked and warped door seals, slippery platform edges, or debris blocking the bottom of overhead doors. Loading and unloading docks concentrate vehicles, personnel, goods, and heavy equipment within a single opening; even if the lifting platforms and doors are still operational, it doesn't mean loading and unloading can continue. The first step after rain should be isolating risks, not repeatedly pressing buttons to test the system.
Visual inspection can be performed by on-site personnel after the rain.
- First, make sure that the passageways, pits, and drains are not blocked by cardboard boxes, stretch film, or other debris; do not put your hands into the gaps in the platform to clear obstructions.
- Inspect the door seal or door cover from a safe distance: check if the foam is absorbing water and sagging, if the canvas is torn, and if the fasteners are loose.
- Observe the bottom of the overhead gate, the guide rails, and the bottom beam for mud, leaves, impact marks, or uneven height on one side.
- Check the platform surface and anti-slip lip plate for water accumulation, obvious deformation, cracks, or oil stains.
- Without entering the danger zone, record control panel indications, unusual sounds, and fault codes; do not open the electrical box or hydraulic cover.
In which situations should you not attempt to fix it yourself?
The lifting platform, door springs, steel cables, hydraulic system, and overhead door rails may all store energy or bear heavy loads. Do not attempt to reset the platform using pry bars, forklifts, or by pushing or pulling with multiple people if the platform is not flush with the truck bed, the lip plate is not fully lowered, the door is only raised on one side, the steel cables are loose, or the bottom door seal has fallen off due to water damage. Also, do not clean the bottom of the door while the vehicle is still pressing against the door seal or the platform is not fully lowered. Any incorrect action could result in pinching, falling, or damage to cargo.
How to record repair requests beforehand to facilitate inspection scheduling?
Photograph the entire berth, platform side, door seals, door tracks, and control panel. Record the time when the problem was first discovered after rainfall, whether any vehicles touched it, whether the door or platform was operated, and whether it can be safely closed now. If the property management, carrier, or insurance process requires information, preserve the original photos, videos, loading and unloading records, and existing maintenance work orders. Confirm with the property management or contractor whether a COI is required, the scope of repair, and the entry arrangements; do not make any promises regarding repair conclusions or liability attribution.
Before resuming use, please check these four items carefully.
- Drainage is unobstructed, and the platform surface is free of water accumulation, oil stains, and loose parts;
- The platform, lip plate, and vehicle constraint procedures were tested in accordance with the equipment specifications and on-site procedures.
- The overhead gate can be opened and closed completely, and there are no abnormalities in the guide rails, bottom beams, and safety devices.
- Door seals, buffers, and surrounding fasteners help maintain stability when the vehicle is parked.
Rainy season maintenance involves more than just patching a door seal. Repeated water accumulation usually requires checking the drainage slope, pit cleanliness, door bottom seal, damper, and door alignment. Documenting post-rain abnormalities alongside regular maintenance helps managers distinguish between one-off cleanup issues and equipment problems requiring professional inspection.
