Are automatic swing doors in New York shops malfunctioning? During peak seasons with high customer traffic, prioritize controlling the risk of accidental opening and accidental pinching.
During the summer, with frequent traffic, air-conditioned spaces, delivery carts, shopping carts, and queues of people all converge at shop entrances. If automatic swing doors exhibit issues such as opening when no one is approaching, delaying movement after sensing a person, closing too quickly, or stopping halfway through opening, it's unwise to rely on repeated waving or pushing/pulling to determine the problem. Sensors, control systems, door panels, arms, and access areas are interconnected; a seemingly minor anomaly could escalate into a risk of people getting pinched, tripping, or losing control of the entrance during peak hours.
First, conduct non-contact observation of the passage environment.
Stand outside the door's swing range and observe whether the anomaly only occurs at a certain time, on a specific side of the sensor area, or worsens under direct sunlight, when there is water accumulation at the doorway, when the doormat is raised, or when a shopping cart passes by. Record whether the door is single or double-leaf, whether the door is in the open or closed direction when the anomaly occurs, and whether there are any temporary posters, shelves, umbrella stands, or cleaning equipment nearby entering the sensor range. Do not stand in the door's sweeping path while observing, and do not have colleagues test the door speed back and forth.
Which signals mean that it should be stopped immediately?
Doors that scrape the floor, hit the frame, or bounce back; doors that suddenly start only when someone is approaching the back door; doors that do not decelerate properly when about to close; doors that stop halfway open and block the passage; or doors that require people to hold the door open with their bodies to pass through are all unsuitable for continued use. If there is no clear and safe detour route next to the entrance, the on-site supervisor and property management should be notified first to avoid staff temporarily directing the flow of people while ignoring emergency passage requirements.
What can I do while waiting for the inspection?
- Without affecting evacuation and unimpeded access, clear detour signs should be set up, and the area around the alternative entrance should be kept dry and free of debris.
- Remove shelves, display boards, trolleys, and floor mats from the door swing range and sensing area, but do not move the door, arm, or control box.
- Record the time of the anomaly, weather, and pedestrian flow; if it is safe to take pictures, capture a panoramic view of the entrance, the area around the sensor zone, and the ground under the door.
- Confirm the work order, entry time, access control, and COI requirements with the property management; the scope of repair, parts, costs, and timeframe should be based on the on-site inspection.
What should be explained when reporting a repair?
Please provide the shop address, type and number of doors, whether there is any impact on accessibility or business operations, whether the door was opened accidentally, opened late, closed abnormally, or is completely inoperable, and whether there has been any recent moving, cleaning, impact, or construction. If the abnormality occurred after rain or during periods of strong sunlight, please also provide this information to help on-site personnel prioritize their inspection. When it comes to property procedures, please review the COI and work order preparation before emergency repairs of commercial doors .
Why not adjust it yourself?
The speed, opening range, and sensor settings of automatic swing doors need to be determined in conjunction with the door weight, hardware, and passage space on site. Rotating the adjustment parts by feel or obstructing the sensors may cause the original protection logic to fail and may also mask problems with door alignment or mechanical components. If a glass entrance door has issues such as swinging back, not closing properly, or unusual noises, refer to the safety inspection for shop glass door closers ; if there is visible damage to the door leaf or frame, passage should be isolated first, and an on-site inspection should be arranged.
