Roller shutter door safety inspection , August 27, 2026

Are there horizontal gaps appearing in the slats of commercial roller blinds in New York? Don't continue raising or lowering them.

Late summer deliveries, cleaning, and evening closing often result in commercial roller shutters being raised and lowered multiple times in a short period. If a horizontal gap suddenly appears in the middle of the shutter, a section curls outward, or adjacent slats appear not to be properly fastened, this should not be dismissed as a simple aesthetic issue. The slats, end locks, guide rails, and roller shaft connections all contribute to ensuring the shutter can be raised and lowered smoothly; before the cause is identified, each additional raising or lowering operation could increase the risk of jamming, pinching, or loss of control within the doorway.

If you see the curtain slats visibly detached from the guide rail, multiple slats misaligned, edges cracked or sharp, one side of the curtain moving first, the bottom beam uneven, or if there is jamming, unusual noise, or abnormal shaking after control, please stop using the doorway immediately and isolate it according to the site procedures. Do not push the curtain slats back from under the door, pry open the seams with tools, disassemble the roller cover, or temporarily fix the stress points with tape, wire, or wooden blocks.

First, determine the three types of visible information based on the safe distance.

  1. Where is the gap: Note whether it's near the top, middle, or bottom; whether it's a single slat warped outwards, or an unevenness appearing in a continuous area. Don't simply write down your observations as "the hook is broken" or "the shaft is broken."
  2. Check for symmetry on both sides: ensure the edges of the curtain remain within the guide rails, that the left and right heights are similar, and that the bottom beam is stably flush with the ground. Do not stand directly beneath the door or in the vehicle's driving line when observing.
  3. What happened before the anomaly: This can be recorded if there was any rubbing of goods, unusual noises, water ingress, continuous high-frequency use, or if a jam was detected in the previous shift. These are on-site clues, but not sufficient to determine the cause of the malfunction remotely.

In which situations should you not "try again after correcting the initial result"?

Any door curtain involving load-bearing, guiding, or roller connections is unsuitable for manual repositioning by on-site personnel. The curtain slats may shift again during the next movement; repeated testing increases the risk of pinching and falling, especially if there are pallet trucks, delivery vehicles, or pedestrians near the doorway. In particular, if the curtain is stuck in a half-open position, the two sides are uneven in height, the edges have detached from the guide rail, there are metal fragments, or any parts are hanging, personnel and vehicles should be moved out of the movement area first, an alternative passage should be set up, and then an inspection should be arranged.

Possible actions and inappropriate actions

Provided the door is completely stationary and isolated, take panoramic photos from a safe distance on the front and both sides, noting the doorway number, gap location, and first discovery time. You can also clear away any loose debris such as cardboard boxes or plastic film near the doorway. Do not put your hands into the guide rails, do not stand on a ladder to check the rollers, do not open the control box, pull the chain, or manually release the device, and do not ask colleagues to pull the door from the other side. If the door is already half-open, treat it as a controlled abnormal device, not a temporary pedestrian entrance.

Separate symptoms from existing safety records

Unevenness between the curtain slats and the bottom beam, stiffness after rain, or abnormal manual chain operation may occur simultaneously, but these should not be lumped together into a single, general statement that "the roller shutter door is broken." If one side of the bottom beam is suspended, refer to the discontinuation boundary for uneven bottom beams of roller shutter doors ; if rust or dampness in the electrical area occurs after rain, record the issue according to the safety procedures for stiffness during raising and lowering after rain ; if the manual chain is stuck, stop forcibly pulling according to the principles for handling chain abnormalities . Recording these separately allows for more accurate on-site inspections and avoids reoperating the malfunctioning door to collect information.

What documents should be prepared before reporting a repair?

When contacting service personnel, please provide the door type, doorway location, height of gaps or misalignments, whether it affects locking and passage, the last time it was used normally, and photos or videos taken from a distance. For commercial properties, please also specify if there is a work order, the time of entry, loading/unloading arrangements, or COI requirements. The specific cause of the malfunction, repairable scope, parts, costs, and conditions for restoring use should be based on on-site inspection and property management procedures; do not allow the malfunctioning door to be run again simply to take additional videos.

First, isolate the abnormal doorway, then arrange for on-site inspection.

Please prepare the doorway number, the location of the abnormal curtain, whether it obstructs passage or requires locking, and photos or videos taken from a safe distance. New York Door Fix Master Consultation is available on on-site inspection arrangements for commercial roller shutters, commercial garage doors, and related doors.
