Are your New York store's door guards loose, bent, or scratching your shoes? Do not try to fix it by drilling a hole yourself.
As fall approaches the New York metropolitan area, rain, sand on shoe soles, delivery carts, and the frequent opening and closing of doors can easily cause problems with kick guards underneath store entrances. Problems can include bent edges or loose screws, metal scraping sounds when opening doors, or shoes, rags, mats, etc. getting caught on the edges. Kick guards may look decorative, but they typically work with the door surface, under-door gaps, locks, and passageways. Forcing a loose guard to flatten may not solve the underlying problem, such as door impact, corrosion, or damaged mounting holes.
First, determine whether the problem is with the door material or the movement of the door.
Observe the door opening and closing normally from a safe distance, as long as you do not impede customer traffic and no one is around the door. Note whether the looseness occurs at the lock edge, hinge edge, or bottom of the door; whether the bending occurs when the door is at rest or only when fully closed; whether the door requires more force or pull to open and close; whether new scratching or metallic noises occur; and whether the latch engages naturally in the lock. These are repair clues, not steps that instruct field workers to loosen screws, lift panels, or adjust hinges.
The scope for preparation is limited.
- Clear the aisle: Follow site cleaning procedures, including removing standing water from doorways and removing rolled up mats, shelves, carts, etc. that may be blocking doors. Do not step on rolled edges, and do not place cardboard boxes under doors.
- Photograph the exterior of the building, but do not touch the structure. Take pictures of the entire door, any removable parts of the footboard, any visible fastening points, and any scuff marks around it. Do not photograph key numbers, access control codes, checkout screens, or employee information.
- Record the circumstances under which the anomaly occurred. Record the time of first discovery, whether the anomaly was aggravated by movement of goods, cleaning, rainfall or rush hours, whether the anomaly occurred only in the direction of opening or closing the door, and whether the door could be locked.
- Check site boundaries: For shopping malls, office buildings, or common entrances, first check the site's work orders, access times, and Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements. Temporary changes to entrances and exits or public rights-of-way must be determined by site management in accordance with established procedures.
Under what circumstances would it not be appropriate to continue using the “screw it” method?
Recurring loosening of the kick plate may be due to aging fasteners, door impact, rubbing of the bottom of the door against the floor, or misalignment of the door. Drilling holes or replacing screws yourself can damage the door's internal structure, increase distortion, or create new interference when the door closes. If your door becomes stiff after rain or the latch is not aligned properly, Observation criteria for latch misalignment on commercial wooden doors after rainy weather Please refer to . If the threshold, door bottom molding, or floor mat affects the opening and closing of the door; Follow your store’s threshold and door bottom molding safety guidelines. Please check. The same temporary solutions should not be applied depending on the type and material of the door.
What should I explain when handing over shifts and reporting repairs?
Do not allow employees to repeatedly open and close doors with curved corners. Also, don't assume a door is safe just because it can still be pushed open. Shift handover information should include the location and purpose of the door, the material and looseness of step guards, whether there are sharp edges or tripping hazards, whether there are any problems with the opening/closing and locking functions, existing containment measures, building management notices, and entry regulations. If fire doors, emergency exits, escape ramps, or common passageways are involved, site emergency procedures should be followed first.
When contacting the maintenance team, please prepare photos taken from a distance, the time the abnormality occurred, whether you are accompanied during impact or cleaning, whether the door is worn by contact with the floor or door frame, whether the locking function is affected, building management work instructions, and requirements for issuance of a Certificate of Liability Insurance (COI). The scope of repairs, required materials, costs, and conditions for return to service will be determined by on-site inspection and site procedures. This document provides general security information only and is not a substitute for building management, access control management, or professional judgment.
Before raising the kick guard, first check the passage and locking condition.
