loading dock security - September 29, 2026

Are the lights at your New York shipping dock malfunctioning? Stop unloading operations at that berth.

As fall approaches, warehouses, retail backrooms and distribution centers in the New York metropolitan area often experience early sunsets, dazzling sunshine after rain, and peak unloading times. If the reversing light outside the loading dock does not come on, flashes repeatedly, or the internal and external signals do not match the actual situation, do not simply conclude that it is a “bulb problem” and proceed to park the vehicle or enter or exit the forklift.

First, we must distinguish between “seeing” and “causal inference.”

Stand outside the path of traffic and the edge of the platform and observe just one complete change of state that occurs naturally. That means, check which lights are not working or have an unusual color, are they occurring only on certain platforms, are any abnormalities noticed before or while the vehicle is approaching the platform, are you seeing rain, signs of collision, damaged covers or exposed wiring? Note the platform number and time and take photos from a distance. Do not repeatedly put the vehicle in reverse, press control buttons, or require employees to lean out of the platform for the test.

First, complete four low-risk preparations:

  1. Stop docking and forklift traffic at the affected berthing facility. Site supervisors must coordinate unloading sequences and temporary routes according to site procedures. Do not remove the light cover or open the control box directly.
  2. Clear the warning area: Remove cardboard boxes, pallets and debris that can be safely moved, and keep personnel away from platform edges, doorways and vehicle turns. Do not forcefully remove objects already secured by the equipment.
  3. Keep clear records: Take panoramic photos of parking spaces, visible traffic lights, and ground conditions, and note whether vehicles are parked, doors are closed, there is standing water, or there are signs of a collision. There is no need to photograph vehicle license plates, vehicle manifests, or access control screens.
  4. Check site layout: If managed by a grounds management company, park or third-party logistics company, first check work orders, work hours, access rules and background check (COI) requirements. Temporary closure of berths must be decided by site management.

Under what circumstances should we not keep trying?

If internal and external status indicators contradict each other, vehicles are parked but personnel cannot determine constraints or loading/unloading conditions, lights or covers are broken, wires are exposed, strange odors or noises are emitted from the control box, water is standing on the platform, leveling boards do not reliably return to their original positions, or doors operate abnormally, work at the relevant berthing facility must be stopped and reported. Do not use cell phone lights, tape, temporary wiring, hand signals, or the phrase “someone is watching” to replace existing field procedures. Additionally, do not climb over platform edges, crawl under equipment, or bypass protection devices.

Why doesn't turning a light on mean you can always get back to work?

The condition of the indicator lights may be affected by lighting, power supply, control signals, wiring, equipment interlocks, or site conditions, and temporary restoration alone cannot ensure safe operation of the entire berthing facility. If the problem is related to the condition of the vehicle's restraints, Refer to the isolation point in the Vehicle Immobilizer Abnormal Condition Record. If the platform edge does not return to its original position, Follow handling procedures over platform edges. Please see . How to Write Work Orders More Effectively

Please clearly state the marina number, signal light location (inside or outside), light operation status (off, flashing, inconsistent with actual situation), time of first discovery, whether vehicle is parked, impact on unloading operations or forklift traffic, and presence of signs of flooding or collision. Attaching distant photos showing whether work has been halted and any entry action required will help determine the situation rather than simply stating "light failure." The scope of repairs, costs, conditions for resumption of work, and Certificate of Incident (COI) requirements should be determined based on site inspection and field procedures.

If the parking signal light comes on abnormally, first separate the vehicle and person.

Before contacting us, please prepare photos or videos of parking space location, abnormal signs, whether vehicles are already parked, whether loading and unloading will be affected, time of first discovery, building management work order or proof of responsibility (COI).
