Observation of shipping docks, October 4, 2026

New York's loading dock doors are open, but your cart still doesn't work? Do not test drive with a forklift.

In October, deliveries begin early in the morning and handovers become more frequent in the New York metropolitan area. Even if the berth gate is open and a truck is approaching, “gate open” should not be taken as a signal to allow passage if the platform is not as available as usual or if field personnel are not clear about the sequence of gates, vehicles, and platforms. Controls, interlocks and management procedures vary from site to site, so things like testing the road with a forklift empty, checking the edge with a wheelbarrow, or repeatedly pushing buttons can turn a controllable wait time into a risk of fall, injury or vehicle displacement.

If existing working conditions cannot be confirmed, including the connection between the platform and the transport vehicle, whether the vehicle is securely positioned on the platform, and whether the entrance or exit is passable, entry of forklifts and handcarts should be avoided. Do not use wood, pallets, steel plates, etc. to gain height, crawl under the platform, stand on the edge of the platform to look around, or ignore established procedures to save time.

First, we need to distinguish between “seeing a door open” and “being able to do homework.”

  1. Entrance: On the safe side of the platform, note whether the door is fully open, stuck in an unusual position, and whether there are any falling objects, water stains, or signs of impact near the doorway. Do not touch rails, wire ropes or control parts.
  2. Transition: Observe the visible position of the control plate and rib plate and check for any steps or gaps between the platform and the carriage. If tension and overlap are not checked, do not allow the machine to go over that area.
  3. Parking space: Record the parking space number, whether the truck is parked, whether there are people or vehicles nearby, and whether there is an identified alternative route to the site. Alternative routes must not obstruct fire or personnel escape routes.

These observations are intended to help administrators and maintenance personnel clarify the scope of the problem and are not intended to diagnose internal defects. Constraints and status indicators for doors, platforms, and vehicles may be interrelated or individually abnormal. Restoration of one specific operation does not imply that the entire operating condition has been restored.

Why isn't it safe to "give it a try"?

When forklifts, loaded pallets, and platform edges all come together at one point, even small height differences or vehicle displacements can lead to major hazards. Pushing down pallets with a forklift, having workers stand between the truck bed and platform to check for gaps, or pushing materials into gaps all increase the risk of falls and crushing accidents. If the platform itself is slowly sinking, first Refer to isolation guidelines when adjusting platform position. If vehicle restrictions or status indicators are not available, Stop boundary in abnormal parking conditions Please check . These measures should not replace on-site inspection procedures.

What information should be included in a post-suspension work order?

After notifying the site supervisor, follow established procedures to mark the berth as temporarily unavailable and record the status of each entrance, platform, and vehicle. Log items include when an anomaly occurred, whether a door was opened, the visible location of the platform, whether vehicles were parked on the platform, whether it affected the entry and exit of goods, whether there was a recent crash, heavy rain or power outage, and more. Take the entire photo or video from a safe distance. However, please do not photograph employee identification, shipping documents, or information related to restricted areas. For communal buildings, warehouses, and retail offices, facility management instructions, escorts, access times, and certification of responsibility (COI) submission requirements should also be confirmed in advance.

When should you take action right away rather than waiting until the next inspection?

If the door is stuck in an abnormal position, the platform and carriage are not connected reliably, the condition of the vehicle cannot be determined, there is damage or leakage to the edges, or the problem affects personnel evacuation and normal loading and unloading, on-site emergency procedures should be upgraded. Scope of repairs, parts, costs and conditions for return to service are subject to on-site inspection, equipment management and asset management procedures. This document does not provide instructions for circumventing any control equipment or safety devices.

First, restore berthing routes back to control.
