Are the pedestrian gates installed at the New York City overpass barriers not closing properly? Don't secure it with the chain yet.
In the New York metropolitan area in October, warehouses, repair shops, and back-end workshops often continue receiving, inventorying, and shipping work even after dark. Some commercial gates have a separate pedestrian gate on the inside to allow people to enter and exit even when the main gate is closed. If this small door appears to be closed but is not properly locked, has a gap at the edge, the handle bounces abnormally, or the status indicator does not match the actual situation, you cannot simply dismiss it as "the lock is loose." This not only affects personnel traffic and security, but may also be related to the usage environment of the door itself.
First, note the “lock status”. Don't guess parts.
Stand outside the door's range of motion, maintain a safe distance, and observe whether the small door does not close, springs back after closing, or whether the handle moves but the locking feel is unclear. At the same time, check the door frame, door edges, and surrounding raised door panels for any visible scratches, deformities, or new gaps. Take photos of the entire door and the location of small doors, avoiding access control devices, license plates, delivery slips, etc. Record when the anomaly first occurred, whether it was hit by a cart, and whether it occurred after frequent deliveries. This helps the service provider reframe the situation. This does not mean field personnel should remove handles, latches, or adjust door hardware.
How will we separate pedestrian and vehicle traffic that evening?
- Clearly indicate alternate entrances and exits. Site supervisors should inform colleagues of identified and available pedestrian routes to prevent them from crawling under half-open overpasses or crossing vehicle backup lanes.
- Abnormal Entrance Isolation: Install clear signage to keep carts, forklifts, and items to be moved away from the door area and away from the area in front of the door and in accordance with site procedures, without disturbing the door.
- Stop testing integration. Don't judge whether something "works sometimes" by repeatedly opening and closing a small door, repeatedly pressing the main door wall control button, or having two people pushing and pulling each other.
- Please retain your handover information. Please indicate entrance number, abnormal symptoms, current quarantine measures, alternate route and last time normal conditions were present.
Under what circumstances should you stop taking matters into your own hands?
If an overhead gate cannot lock a small gate in the half-open position, there are signs of impact on the door leaf or frame, a person must pass under the gate, or there is no reliable alternative exit on site, our experience is that it is not advisable to continue using that gate. If a small door is used for egress, building management and site emergency procedures must be followed and temporary locks should not be used in place of a defined route of passage. The balance, rails, limit switches and safety devices of the overhead gate should not be arbitrarily adjusted due to small door problems, and if the gate operates abnormally. When the overhead gate malfunctions, a stop boundary line is set. Please refer to .
What should I do to prepare before submitting a repair request to avoid delays in on-site inspection?
When contacting your service provider, please be clear about the location of the entrance, whether there is a recessed pedestrian entrance, when the lock malfunction occurred, overnight delivery, and any impact on security or access. Please prepare distant photos, size or number of entrances, availability for safety inspections, work orders, and Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements. If you have other access control or door closing problems at the same location, describe them all together but do not combine them into a single report called "Door Malfunction." For example, The main contents of the access control malfunction record You can refer to: Repair scope, parts, cost, recovery time, and reuse conditions should be determined based on site inspection and field procedures.
If it is unclear whether a small door is locked, first clear the expected route of passage.
