Autumn/Winter Roller Shutter Door Safety (October 17, 2026)

Do shutters open slowly when temperatures drop in New York? Don't keep pressing the button.

As we enter a period of increased temperature difference between day and night in the New York metropolitan area, you may experience issues such as roller shutters behind stores or buildings opening slower than usual, making a short buzzing sound after you press the button, stopping midway, or requiring multiple presses to open. Morning humidity, items accumulating near doorways, or friction from shutters closing the day before can all make it difficult to determine the cause of these problems. Don't jump to the conclusion that "it's because of the cold weather" or try to force it open by pressing the button repeatedly. First, move doorways, people, vehicles, etc. that may prevent the shutter from opening properly from the area to a safer location.

If the door curtain tilts, bounces, gets stuck half-open, makes metal scraping or strange noises, or emits a burning smell or overheats from the control box, do not operate it repeatedly. Do not disassemble control boxes, loosen springs or wire ropes, climb on door curtains, or allow people or vehicles to pass under doors that are not properly secured. If this is the only exit, please follow existing evacuation and movement guidelines for the site.

First, conduct a non-contact safety observation.

Stand outside the door's range of motion and check for cardboard boxes, carts, trash cans or standing water on either side of the door. Note whether the door stops moving when you first press the button, or whether it starts moving and then slows down, tilts, or stops. Observe whether control buttons, key switches, or remote controls respond only in certain positions, but do not disassemble the panel to test. If the problem persists after removing the obvious obstruction, do not increase the number of times you press the “Find Pattern” button. These observations help service providers identify inspection areas related to door curtains, guide rails, transmissions, or controls instead of having field personnel diagnose the fault themselves.

These temporary measures focus on quarantine entrances and exits.

  1. Clearly demarcate areas: Move pedestrian and unloading routes under the door curtains and on either side of the guide rails. If necessary, have an on-site person in charge guard the entrance.
  2. Do not use crowbars: Do not use forklifts, vehicles, crowbars, or ropes to push or pull curtains. This may increase damage to the guide rails, lower beams or moving parts.
  3. Maintain usable entrances and exits: Only use doors that are known to be safe as an alternate route. Do not use emergency exits or unsecured back doors as your everyday entrance.
  4. Please record the following: When it happens, the weather, what the door is for, where it stops, whether the locks are affected, and whether there are vehicles on site waiting to enter.

When should I stop using it immediately and contact me for inspection?

If the curtain height is uneven, the bottom beam is hanging, is clearly separated from the guide rail, accelerates suddenly when raising or lowering, or the roller shutter does not close properly, do not attempt to close it any further. If the door control is already “idling” or does not stop, Stop boundary for roller shutter control units or more Please refer to . If foreign matter accumulates on the guide rail or there is friction on the side of the curtain, first Follow safety checks for debris accumulation on the side guide rail. Please read. These methods are not a substitute for field repairs, nor do they imply that you can adjust load-bearing components yourself.

Please check access conditions before submitting a repair request.

When contacting your service provider, please provide information about the exact location and type of the door, its current open/closed state, any unusual noises or odors, any impact on business or entry of goods, and other safe and usable entrances into the building. You may bring photos or short videos taken from a distance, but please do not take photos standing under the door. Please check in advance if reservations, work orders, access permits, or proof of liability insurance (COI) are required due to building or facility management regulations. Scope of repairs, parts, cost, and conditions for return to service will be determined by on-site inspection and facility regulations.

If your roller shutter door is unstable when starting to operate, leave the door opening and related information to a professional.
