Store closure and door magnet security (October 19, 2026)

Does the alarm still go off when the New York store is closed? Don't keep knocking on the door.

As the sun sets early in the fall, many stores in the New York metropolitan area check out, clean, and check door locks and alarm systems after completing the last delivery. If the door appears to be firmly seated against the door frame, but the alarm panel or management system continues to display the message “Door not closed”, do not simply assume it is a malfunction or attempt to silence the alarm by slamming the door, kicking it, or blocking the opening. There can be many causes, including the misalignment of the door, the latch, door frame, door sensor location, or the alarm device itself, and an on-site inspection alone cannot determine the exact cause.

Stop trying to lock the door if it does not lock properly, closes and then opens again, has cracked or loose glass or fittings, has visibly deformed door frames, smells burning, or has exposed wires. Do not remove the alarm panel, short-circuit the door's magnetic circuit, remove the lock body, or use tape, magnets, rope or heavy objects to pretend the door is closed. If the door connects to a common entrance, escape route, or fire compartment, the site manager must handle it in accordance with existing building and safety procedures.

First, record the “door status” and “information message status” respectively.

Regularly observe door closure from a safe distance when no customers, carts or cleaning staff are passing by. Check whether the door closes completely against the door frame, whether the latch catches naturally on the strike plate, whether it takes a lot of force to close the handle, and whether the notification appears as soon as the door is closed or after a while. Record the location of the door, whether it is a single or double door, what the notice was, when it was first noticed, and whether the door was moved, cleaned, shocked or had any access control changes during the day. Recording these facts is much more helpful for future inspections than opening and closing the door repeatedly.

Low-Risk Preparation

  1. Make space to clean: Remove doormats, cardboard boxes, signs and litter from the front door, and avoid touching door magnets, latches, door closers, hinges or cables.
  2. Keep your photos safe: Take pictures of the entire entrance, the engagement of the door and frame, the side of the lock, and the alarm sound. Do not take photos of passwords, keys, customer information, or access control numbers.
  3. Check site boundaries: Determine whether the door is the only entrance or exit and will affect closing times or alarm activation, and ask staff to identify alternative routes available. Do not block evacuation routes.
  4. Check the entry and exit procedures: Check with building management for work orders, personnel, permitted inspection times, access control, and Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements. Written requirements can vary from building to building, so don't guess by looking at old documents.

To prevent attack, do not force open doors or make unauthorized modifications to the equipment.

Stop testing if physical force is required to lock the door, the latch does not latch properly, the door touches the door frame, unusual noise, overheating, or intermittent alarms occur. Forcibly knocking on the door may cause further damage to the door frame or lock, and removing wiring, attaching magnets, or temporarily disconnecting power may make it difficult to verify actual access and security. How can I minimize the verification process when requesting repairs?

Please provide the exact location of the door, the type of door, whether the door can be physically closed and locked, the initial alarm message, the time the anomaly occurred, and whether the anomaly affects business, store closures, or access. A photo taken from a distance and a short video showing the door closing normally will suffice. However, do not repeatedly slam the door to record video. Please also indicate the building maintenance work order number, Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements, and the window at which entry is permitted. The cause of failure, scope of repair, parts, cost, and conditions for alarm system recovery and reuse are determined based on on-site inspection and field procedures.

Why does the system say it's not closed even though the door is closed? First, check the lock status and access control status.
