Automatic door access safety (October 26, 2026)

Is your New York automatic sliding door's escape panel detaching and unable to reset? Don't force it back onto the track.

In the late autumn of the New York metropolitan area, umbrellas, trolleys, insulated delivery boxes, and earlier closing times increase pressure on automatic door entrances. Some automatic sliding doors have a breakout function: in specific emergency situations, the door can be designed to detach from its normal sliding position. If the panel appears to return to its original position after being pushed open but leaves uneven gaps, alarms keep going off, or the door no longer opens and closes smoothly, treat it as a passage and evacuation issue rather than a minor malfunction that can be solved by force.

If the entrance is part of an evacuation route, and the door is visibly crooked, the glass or frame is loose, the door opens and closes unpredictably, or normal passage from the evacuation side cannot be confirmed on-site, stop allowing customers and employees to pass through the door and arrange alternative entrances or exits according to the property and site emergency procedures. Do not "secure" the door with tape, door wedges, ropes, shelves, or temporary padlocks.

First confirm the observed phenomenon, then do not repeatedly reset.

Observe and record from outside the door's movement range: whether the problem occurs after it is pushed open, when it closes automatically, or after power is restored; whether it is a single door misalignment, an abnormal gap between two doors, or a controller malfunction; whether there is visible damage to the door edge, floor guide, and glass. Only models with this function will have the corresponding disengagement and reset methods; do not judge solely by appearance. Do not push the door with your shoulder, pull on the belt or frame to "bend" it back, and do not remove the upper chassis, floor guide, or sensor cover.

Four Low-Risk Preparations You Can Make

  1. Define the area around the door: move floor mats, display shelves, shopping carts, and loose packaging away from the doorway; avoid people standing in door gaps, in front of or behind the door, and in the sliding path while waiting.
  2. Follow the existing process for traffic diversion: the on-site supervisor will confirm which alternative passage is operational. Exits, passageways, and door hardware must not be obstructed by temporary items.
  3. Record information from a distance: take photos of the entire door, door gaps, display or alarm information, and the surrounding ground conditions; do not capture customers, faces, access control codes, or alarm keypads.
  4. Organize work order information: Write down the door location, whether it is the main entrance, the start time of the abnormality, whether there was a power outage or damage from a trolley, as well as the property's appointment window, access control and COI requirements.

When should you stop self-processing?

Testing should not continue if the door cannot remain in its normal position, the glass is cracked or wobbly, there are unusual noises from the overhead hanging parts, or any attempt to move the door suddenly. Even if the door can be opened temporarily, this does not mean that evacuation functionality has been restored. New York City fire regulations require that necessary evacuation routes remain unobstructed and that relevant door hardware and physical components be in good working order; specific applicable requirements and restoration of use should be based on site conditions, equipment data, and on-site professional judgment.

How to describe the problem more clearly when reporting a repair?

Please specify the door's brand or visible markings, whether it's a single or double door, whether the door has been pushed open outwards, whether it can currently complete a stable opening and closing cycle, whether there are indicator lights or buzzers, whether alternative entrances are available, and whether it involves business hours or evacuation routes. If the door remains half-open after a power outage, refer to the safety observation for an automatic sliding door half-open after a power outage ; if the bottom scrapes against the ground or deviates from its side, check for abnormalities in the sliding door's floor guide components . This information can help describe the phenomenon but cannot replace inspection or allow for judgment.

The entrance status is unclear; allow people to pass through the confirmed passageways first.
