Access Control Door Security - July 30, 2026

Are fire exit doors in New York always blocked in the summer? Let's look at the risks of obstruction and blockage.

When the weather is hot and humid, when there is increased foot traffic, or when goods are frequently moved, some people may prop open doors in corridors, back doors, or stairwells for convenience. However, if a door is blocked by wooden wedges, cardboard boxes, doorstops, or heavy objects for a long time, it may conceal problems with the door's self-closing mechanism, latch, or frame, and may also alter the original passage and safety arrangements of the site.

If a door cannot close reliably on its own, requires constant support with heavy objects, droops and scrapes the floor, the latch fails to engage, hardware is loose, glass or the door frame is broken, or the door is located in an evacuation route, fire exit, public corridor, or accessible area, please stop attempting to adjust it yourself. Do not disassemble the door closer, escape lever, hinges, lock body, or electrical components; do not use tape, rope, or temporary shims to replace normal functionality. First, isolate the risk according to the property and site's existing procedures and identify alternative routes.

First, distinguish between "temporary door opening needs" and "door malfunctions."

Moving goods, cleaning, or short-term ventilation may require coordinating door openings, but this doesn't mean any door can be left permanently open. Safety logs should begin with the facts: which door it was, which entrance or floor it was located on, when the problem occurred, whether the door malfunctioned while closing, locking, or springing back, and whether it affected customers, employees, or delivery routes. Summer air conditioning pressure differentials, humidity, rolled-up doormats, and peak traffic can all exacerbate existing problems; these are observational clues, not definitive diagnoses.

Four observations that can be safely completed

  1. Take photos of the entire doorway, the gap between the door and the frame, visible scratches, and any obstacles on the ground from a position that does not obstruct the passage; do not put your hands or feet into the hinges, door jambs, or gaps at the bottom of the door.
  2. Remove loose cardboard boxes, advertising signs, corners of floor mats, and other movable objects; do not move heavy objects that are blocking the door, and do not repeatedly slam the door to test it.
  3. Record whether the door can return to the closed position without assistance, whether it allows normal passage, and the frequency of any abnormalities. Do not forcefully push, pull, or remove any hardware for the purpose of recording.
  4. Contact the property management or site manager to confirm the purpose of the door, current access arrangements, work order channels, and entry restrictions. When evacuation or fire safety functions are involved, existing site emergency procedures should be used first.

Which signals should be escalated immediately?

Doors that are tilted towards the passageway, have sharp, deformed, or broken glass along the edges, have loose push bars or locks, are stuck in a half-open position, make obvious friction or impact noises when opening or closing, or require continuous support are not suitable for continued use. If the door is the only entrance or exit, obstructs escape routes, alarm systems, or passage through public areas, it should not be judged as "still usable." Property management, building management, or premises should determine temporary routes and security measures according to their own procedures.

What information is most useful when reporting a repair?

Please specify the exact location, the material and type of the door, whether it is a public or back-office passageway, the start time of the anomaly, photos of the site, whether it can currently be closed or locked, and any known property rules. If the door has been prolongedly opened, experienced impact during moving, or been exposed to moisture, this should also be stated. Complete information helps in scheduling an inspection, but does not guarantee confirmation of the scope of repairs, materials, costs, timeline, or liability.

Reduce the frequency of "leaving doors open for convenience" in daily life.

Short-term moving arrangements, doorway obstruction management, and property management contact information can be incorporated into the store's daily workflow. When ventilation is needed, prioritize methods approved by the site; if you notice that the door is closing slowly, rubbing against the frame, or the latch is unstable, record and report it for repair as soon as possible. Rather than relying on door wedges in the long run, first figure out why the door is not working as it should. Regarding escape door hardware and passage risks, you can check fire escape lock services ; if it is a problem with the door and hardware as a whole, you can also refer to fire door services .
