Is your New York automatic sliding door opening and closing erratically? First, check the sensor area and access safety.
When shopping malls, clinics, office buildings, and street-front shops are changing seasons, restocking, or cleaning after rain, poster racks, umbrella stands, cardboard boxes, floor mats, and trolleys often accumulate in front of automatic sliding doors. If the door starts repeatedly opening when no one is approaching, lingers when someone approaches, or closes prematurely after someone passes by, it shouldn't be simply attributed to a "dirty sensor." Obstructed sensing areas, water accumulation on the threshold, door operating resistance, or malfunctions in control components or safety devices can all affect the predictability of the entrance; controlling the risk of pedestrian traffic is more important than repeatedly testing the door.
First, determine whether the anomaly occurred during the "sensing" or "operation" phase.
When the entrance is not crowded, the doors are stationary, and a site supervisor is present, observe from a safe distance: Did the anomaly occur before someone approached, or after the door had already started moving? Did it only occur on one side, after rain, after cleaning, under direct sunlight, or after display updates? Also, note any hanging decorations, reflective posters, piles of items, raised doormats, or puddles in front of the door. Record only one or a few instances of natural passage; do not have colleagues cross the sensor area back and forth to test it, and never stand in the closing path of two doors to compare reaction speeds.
Limited on-site preparations that can be made
- Remove any safely movable obstructions: Without touching the door, sensors, or cables, remove cardboard boxes, signs, umbrella stands, and trolleys in front of the door, and ensure the floor mat is flat and the ground is dry. Do not move any fixed thresholds, covers, or any components with cables.
- Maintain guided access at entrances: If the site decides to temporarily manage access, the person in charge should arrange personnel to guide visitors to confirmed available entrances, while preserving barrier-free and evacuation space. Temporary guidance is not a confirmation that a malfunctioning door has been reopened.
- Document the appearance and timeline: Photograph the entire door, the ground in front of it, and nearby obstacles from a safe distance. Record the timeline of events such as weather, cleaning, moving goods, decorating adjustments, or restoration after a power outage. Avoid photographing customers, faces, access codes, and internal screens.
- Describe the current status: When reporting a problem, distinguish between "accidentally opened", "no response", "stopped halfway open", "closed too early" or "abnormal noise", and explain whether it affects the main entrance, backup entrance or business hours.
When can you no longer use the "wipe the sensor" method?
Surface dust is not necessarily the cause of the malfunction. If the problem persists after removing temporary obstructions, or if the door speed, pauses, retraction, and centering are unstable, stop attempting to resolve the issue and schedule an inspection. When rainwater enters the entrance area, refer to the observation tips for abnormal rain sensor operation on sliding doors ; if the doormat, threshold, or broom strip obstructs passage, check the safety boundaries between the door threshold and the broom strip . Separate the entrance display from the door work area.
Seasonal promotional signs, takeout racks, sanitizing stations, and rain gear should all be kept out of the sweeping area and nearby zones. Seemingly stable objects can be moved during peak hours, and reflective materials can alter visibility. Supervisors should separately check entrance layouts, cleaning schedules, and delivery routes to avoid confusing accidental triggers with genuine mechanical or control malfunctions. Existing emergency exits should not be blocked or narrowed for any reason.
How to explain the problem more clearly when reporting a repair?
Please prepare the following information: door location, whether it's single or double door, time and environment of the anomaly, presence of nearby displays or water accumulation, unusual noises/shaking of the door, current safety of passage, and property access requirements, work order, and COI. The scope of repair, materials, costs, restoration conditions, and any compliance requirements will be determined based on on-site inspection and site procedures. This document provides general safety information only and does not replace building requirements, property procedures, or professional judgment.
The automatic door is malfunctioning; keep access at the entrance under control for now.
