Will the electronic door latch on a New York commercial fire door release? Don't rope off the door yet.

As fall approaches, office buildings, back-end shopping malls, and health care and educational facilities in the New York metropolitan area will more frequently adjust access control systems, conduct equipment testing, and proactively close certain areas. If the electronic door catch on a commercial fire door remains stuck after expected release, or if the door appears to be held open by a temporary object, this should not be considered a minor failure that simply allows you to "get through the door."

Rather than trying to determine the cause yourself, record the phenomenon first.

From a location that does not impede traffic, observe whether the door is fully pressed against the door stopper and then re-latches when approached, or whether the door itself touches the door frame, bounces, or becomes completely inaccessible. At the same time, note the time the abnormality occurred, the exact location of the door, and whether there are any signs of impact, odor, overheating, loose parts or exposed cables nearby. Site managers can take photos and record short videos from afar, following existing procedures. Don't push and pull the door repeatedly to "test" for a problem. Additionally, do not disassemble the door stopper case, junction box, or alarm interlock device.

Transportation and evacuation must be handled according to site rules.

  1. To field supervisor Please let us know the exact location of the door, whether it is currently open or closed, and whether it affects a frequently used passageway. The supervisor will then determine temporary routes, signage, or area management measures.
  2. Always leave entrances and spaces behind doors clear. Only remove obstacles such as cardboard boxes or carts that can be moved safely. Do not place heavy objects, wedges, door stoppers, rope or tape within the operating range of the door.
  3. Don't mistake "temporary fixing" for repair. Whether door stoppers should be maintained, when they should be released, and whether they interface with other systems should be verified through field procedures, equipment data, and qualified personnel. Apparently normal behavior does not mean recovery.
  4. Save work order information: Note the door number, the time the anomaly was first noticed, the condition of the door at the time, whether testing or construction was underway, and whether it affected entrance or exit or business operations.

What signs indicate you should stop trying immediately?

If a door is stuck open and the cause cannot be determined on site, if the door does not close naturally and does not lock, if damage or looseness to the door latch or surrounding wiring, unusual odors or unusual temperatures are detected, or if an abnormality occurs after an alarm, power outage, testing or modification, you must immediately stop attempting to handle the situation and report it. Do not use rope, wire, tape, magnets, or furniture to secure the door. Do not unplug or plug power supplies, short-circuit wiring, disassemble door hardware, or allow anyone to repeatedly check door openings or the back of the door.

Why do we need to record “why doors can still open and close”?

The fact that the door opens and closes normally only indicates that there was no apparent jamming during the momentary mechanical operation and does not guarantee that the electronic door latch, power supply, control device, linkage device, or door condition are all normal. If there is a problem with the door itself, such as friction on the door frame or poor natural closing, Check for malfunctioning fire door hinges and automatic locks. Please refer to . If the door does not lock automatically after being closed, Blocking standards related to malfunction of automatic fire door locking device Please refer to . How to make repair manuals more useful

The work order must state the following: The location and surroundings of the door, whether the door closer operates continuously or intermittently, whether the door can be fully pressed against the door frame, whether there were power outages, alarms, construction, movement or access control adjustments prior to the failure, whether there is any visible damage, and the impact on current traffic. You must attach a remote photo that does not contain sensitive access control information, and confirm with building management in advance the access times, work order number, and Certificate of Liability Insurance (COI) requirements. The scope of repairs, cost, return to service, and final approval conditions must all be determined based on site inspection and site procedures.

If your door stopper is not working properly, first make sure you have a clear view of the doorway.
