As of October 11, 2026 Safety status of unloading docks

New York loading dock: Is the pilot light arm not returning to its original position? Do not put the vehicle in reverse.

In October, the sun sets early in the New York metropolitan area, and work in warehouses and back yards often continues until late into the evening. If a guide light arm, light head, or bracket installed outside the marina is not in the correct position, tilted toward the ramp, is wobbly, or the display condition does not match the actual condition, you cannot simply conclude that “the light is broken.” These devices can affect the driver's judgment of berth boundaries, setback angles, and berth availability, while exits, platforms, vehicles, and pedestrians may all be within the same work line.

If the light arm extends into the path of traffic, the fastening brackets are visibly loose or sagging, the cables or sheathing are visibly damaged, or the condition of the parking space cannot be positively determined, do not allow vehicles into that parking space and follow site procedures to separate lanes from the edge of the platform. Do not push the light arm by hand, climb on the mounting bracket, or pull on the cable. Also, do not allow the vehicle to test whether it can "slowly" enter the platform.

First, distinguish between "lights not working" and "unable to determine anchorage position."

Observe and record outside of your vehicle's travel lane. Is there something wrong with the brightness, color, lighting rhythm, or position of the lights? Does the problem only appear after rain, at night, or after the vehicle has left? Do the surrounding doorways, wheel chocks, door seals and steering plates all look normal? Take photos from a distance of the entire parking space and the location of the lane contrast devices. However, please do not photograph the driver, vehicle license plate, waybill, and access control information. These observations are for repair reporting purposes only and do not constitute a definitive diagnosis of the cause of a problem in a circuit, sensor, or mechanical component.

Clear your route before waiting for inspection.

  1. Stop backing operations from the relevant berthing facility. Site supervisors should proceed to established berthing facilities according to existing logistics processes and ensure that forklifts, pedestrians, and waiting berthing vehicles do not approach the edge of the platform.
  2. Maintain clear status reports. Record the berth number, the time the anomaly occurred, the location of the lighting equipment, whether a collision or severe weather occurred, and any quarantine measures currently in place.
  3. Dispose of only surrounding debris that can be safely moved. Clear away loose cardboard boxes, plastic film, and scattered pallets from your driveway. Do not walk across the platform or stand between the vehicle and the berth to inspect the equipment.
  4. Check entry conditions: To avoid the hassle of having to find someone on-site after repairs are complete, obtain work order numbers, gated access times, lay-up times, and Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements in advance from Facilities Management or the park.

Under what circumstances is it no longer appropriate to continue receiving goods “based on experience”?

If a vehicle crash dislodges equipment, shakes a light arm, cracks a case, exposes a cable, or field personnel cannot agree on the availability of a parking space, verbal instructions or temporary hand gestures should not replace established procedures. If multiple problems are occurring simultaneously, such as a flatbed trailer not staying in place, an unclear vehicle hold, or an overhead gate operating abnormally, the hazards involved must be isolated individually and multiple problems should not be tackled in a single reversing attempt. No matter how tight the loading and unloading schedule is, personnel should not stand behind vehicles, on the edges of platforms, or under equipment that may be prone to swaying.

How should I describe it along with other berth equipment?

The berthing guidance device is not a replacement for platform, vehicle anchorage, or entrance control signals. If the vehicle fixture indicator light is also abnormal, Deactivation boundary is set when vehicle fixture status is abnormal. Please refer to . If the ocular status indicator itself is displayed incorrectly, Record items for eyepiece indicator abnormalities. Please review. This page is intended only to organize field information and is not a substitute for field procedures, equipment operation manuals, or field inspections.

What information should I have when reporting a repair?

When contacting your service provider, please clearly state the berth number, type of equipment, location of the breakdown, when the breakdown first occurred, whether the vehicle has been hit, any impact on overnight deliveries, and whether any alternative berths are currently available. You can attach distant photos, work orders from the building management office, access control system, certificate of liability insurance (COI), available work hours, etc. The scope of repair, parts, cost, recovery time, and whether the equipment can be restarted will be determined by on-site inspection and building management office procedures, so please refrain from making arbitrary judgments such as that the equipment is simply “loose.”

If parking instructions are unclear, remove your vehicle from the platform first.
