commercial garage door security - August 24, 2026

Are your New York commercial parking lot photoelectric door lights not working? Don't ignore security measures just yet.

In the New York metropolitan area, it is common to install photoelectric sensors on the bottom of both sides of doors in parking lots, warehouses, and rear entrances of buildings to detect whether the passageway under the door is blocked by people, vehicles, or goods. Late summer showers, heavy cleaning water usage, pallet transport, temporary signage, and frequent stocking may cause obstructions or anomalies in this area. If the door bounces repeatedly when closed, beeps but doesn't actually close, or the little lights on both sides are off or blinking, you shouldn't just write it off as a "sensor misorientation." Photoelectric sensors are only one part of a safety system; the door itself, the control system and the surrounding traffic environment must all be comprehensively evaluated.

If your commercial garage door falls unexpectedly, does not stop reliably when closed, or moves in reverse, if the photoelectric sensor housing is broken or cables are exposed, or if the doorway is located in an area with mixed pedestrian and vehicle traffic, immediately stop using the door and evacuate anyone under the door to a safe location. Do not tie two photoelectric sensors together, cover the lights with tape, short out wiring, or cross a doorway when the door is in operation.

Which non-contact observations can you do first?

After the door is fully closed and all vehicles and personnel have stopped passing through, maintain a safe distance and ensure there is a cardboard box, plastic, water, cart, or temporary sign under the doorway. Note whether the anomaly occurs every time, only after strong sunlight or rain, or only after forklifts and vehicles have passed through. Also note whether the door is currently fully open, fully closed, or half open, and whether any abnormal messages are displayed on the control button or remote control. Do not stand under the door to look directly into the camera. Also, do not move the bracket or loosen the alignment screws.

Under what circumstances should you stop introspecting?

The purpose of safety devices is to reduce the risk of entrapment, not to allow workers to ignore them and rush through the task. If the door is not properly aligned, the bottom safety edge is damaged, the rail vibrates, has been hit by a vehicle, or has an inconsistent response when closed, repeatedly pressing the button actually increases the risk of a malfunction. If the door does not work after a power outage or restoration, do not disassemble the control box or electrical equipment. Follow commercial garage door safety guidelines after a power outage. Please refer to . Any attempt to close the door using your hands, a forklift, or any other object must be stopped immediately.

How can we make traffic safer after a service outage?

  1. In accordance with site and facility management procedures, this entrance is temporarily unusable and an alternative entrance has been confirmed not to impede fire or evacuation routes.
  2. Remove trays, loose packaging, and carts near doorways, and only touch individual items. Avoid contact with doors, sensors or cables.
  3. Record entrance number, time of event, weather or cleanliness conditions, operating lights, and whether pickup, parking or business are affected.
  4. If on-site repairs are required, check work orders, access controls, work hours and Certificate of Insurance (COI) requirements in advance. The scope of repairs, parts, costs and conditions for return to service will be determined through on-site inspection.

The abnormal photoelectric sensor and the bottom safety edge are two different things.

Photoelectric sensors typically use light below the doorway to detect obstacles in the passageway, and lower safety barriers provide protection when obstacles are detected. If there is a problem with either of these two devices, it should not be ignored, but the symptoms and inspection items are different. If the door is unstable and springs back when an object is pressed against it, stop the door immediately. The lower anti-pinching safety jaw should be checked for any abnormalities. Door curtains, hinges or joints are cracked, loose or out of alignment; Overhead door panel and hinge processing procedures Accordingly, the entrance must be isolated first. .

What information do I need to provide when reporting a repair?

Please be specific about the location of the entrance, whether it is a commercial garage door or an overhead door, how the door reacts when closed, whether both indicator lights are functioning, whether it has recently been impacted, cleaned, experienced heavy rain or power outages, and whether an alternate route is available. Photos of the panoramic view of the entrance, the exterior of both facilities, and ground conditions taken from a distance are more helpful than directly diagnosing the cause of the failure. If the building management requests a work order or Incident Confirmation (COI) in advance, please specify the relevant details. This does not imply any prior commitment as to the cause of failure, liability, costs or time of completion.

If a photoelectric sensor malfunctions, priority should be given to securing entrances and exits for traffic.

Before contacting us, please have the entrance number, long-distance video or photos of any special requirements (including whether this may affect delivery or vehicle access), and the building management office's entry requirements.
